School of Aeronautics and Astronautics

  • History

Founded in 1945, the Aeronautical Department of Sichuan University was among the pioneers in the education and research of Aerospace Science and Technology in China. In 1952, it was merged with the aeronautical departments of Tsinghua University, Beiyang University, among others, into Beijing Institute of Aeronautics—now known as Beihang University (or BUAA for short). In November 2011, Sichuan University re-established its School of Aeronautics and Astronautics on the basis of previous academic strengths by integrating internal and external resources to follow the cutting-edge development of aerospace science and technology.

  • Strengths

As an important academic and manufacturing base of aerospace engineering in China, Sichuan Province and its surrounding areas have formed complete aerospace equipment manufacturing industry and a comprehensive aviation transportation system, with a large number of enterprises and research institutions engaging in the design and manufacturing of aerospace vehicles as well as the transportation, maintenance and support of civil aviation. Over the past century, Sichuan University has closely collaborated with the industries, research labs and institutions. Platforms for multi-disciplinary integration and collaborative innovation have been established as a result, including national key laboratories, national key disciplines and disciplines that offer doctoral degrees in related areas such as Computer Science and Technology, Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering, Mechanics, Material Science and Engineering, etc.. All of these offer the school unique opportunities of future development.

  • Academics & Mission

With priorities given to researches of Aircraft Propulsion and Combustion Dynamics, Advanced Navigation and Flight Simulation, Aircraft Structure and Mechanism, etc., the School of Aeronautics and Astronautics will work to make breakthroughs in traditional disciplines and management mechanisms and strive to lay a solid foundation in team-building, disciplinary development, scientific research, education, academic exchanges and relevant supporting conditions. We aim to become an important base in the area of aerospace science and technology with distinctive features and strengths both at home and abroad.
